Artist's Comments

We lose a piece of ourselves that we'll never see missing.

My last portfolio piece in Art 101. Charcoal on 18x24. I was NOT expecting to be able to do anything like this, ever. I'm rather proud of it. Comments and critiques encouraged!

I can't believe I haven't commented on this yet ...

Very strong shading work with some great casting shadows and bounce light. The abstract looking head appears as if it is made from metal. Don't know if that's the case (probably not) but the light on it gives me that feel.

The only thing I can think to point out is the perspective of the block that the pear is on. On it's own, it appears to as if I am looking down upon it. When compared to the other objects, the viewpoint seems to be a little lower. I'm guessing that the diagonal sides of it could be slightly more towards the horizontal direction in order to adjust the viewpoint. Not by much though. If you think I'm wrong please tell me.

This is a really strong still life though and you should be proud of it. ARe you going to continue with drawing?

!!! A favorite! THANK YOU.

I pulled out the original to take a look and make sure of what I was seeing - you're right, the block with the pear is askew. The problem is with the near left face... the lines diverge going towards my horizion line(tip of the nose) and I hadn't even noticed. The bottom line should be tilted clockwise juuust a bit to fix that(or the others tilted CCW)

The props were all plaster- with semi-smooth textures. I don't mind the metalic feel - I was pleased with how the eye especially looks like an implant out of sci-fi.

Will I continue? I think I'll try to find the time this month, and soon. I wanted to try and sketch the Grand Canyon in July, but we didn't have enough time with it on my roadtrip.(ooh, I need to tell everyone about that :D)

It still... I want to produce something like this again. I really appreciate the attention you've given to it.

Hey your welcome Jon! Sorry for the late reply. I do agree with how you've analysed those lines with the horizon.

That road trip sounds like lots of fun! It's a shame that you didn't have time to sketch it ... maybe if you took photos, you could do some sketching from them. It's always great practice. :D
